We live and work in the region, and these are some of the places we genuinely recommend to our guests — businesses and experiences that we think add something special to a Ballarat stay.

This isn't intended to be a complete directory. It's a collection of Hidden Lanes favourites: places with character, a strong sense of place, or simply something worth slowing down for.

Where to stay

Hotel Vera Ballarat

A small luxury boutique hotel in central Ballarat, combining contemporary design with a beautifully restored historic building. A particularly lovely choice for couples looking for a special Ballarat escape.

Craig's Royal Hotel

One of Ballarat's great Gold Rush landmarks and an experience in itself. Stay among elaborate nineteenth-century interiors in the heart of the city, within easy walking distance of restaurants, galleries and historic streets.

RACV Goldfields Resort

Set among bushland at Creswick, around 20 minutes from central Ballarat. A good base if you'd like to combine Ballarat with the wider Goldfields, with golf, walking and cycling opportunities on the doorstep.

Sovereign Park Motor Inn

A locally operated accommodation option close to Sovereign Hill and central Ballarat, particularly convenient for families and visitors planning to spend time around the historic Gold Rush precinct.

The Dressing Room Recycled

One of Ballarat's best stops for vintage and pre-loved fashion, with clothing and accessories spanning different eras and styles. Give yourself time here — there's a lot to browse.

Rocket and Belle

A wonderfully characterful antique and vintage store filled with unusual furniture, collectables, industrial pieces and quirky objects. Perfect for travellers who prefer their shopping with a little history and personality.

The Known World Bookshop

A beautiful and atmospheric secondhand bookshop on Main Road, packed with quality books and the kind of wonderfully eclectic atmosphere that makes you want to linger. One of our favourite places for book lovers to discover in Ballarat.

Alexa's Treasures

A Ballarat favourite for lovers of vintage jewellery and collectables, particularly known for its extensive range of vintage costume jewellery. A lovely place to browse for something unusual with a story behind it.

Hattie and the Wolf

A colourful local favourite for gifts, homewares, art, clothing and work by independent makers, with plenty of delightfully unexpected finds.

Buninyong Gift House

A lovely excuse to explore historic Buninyong, with gifts, homewares and locally inspired pieces in the heart of the village.

A relaxed Ballarat café for coffee, breakfast or brunch, with a welcoming neighbourhood feel.

The Shared Table

Destination dining in nearby Buninyong, with thoughtful food and a strong connection to the region. Worth making the short trip out of central Ballarat.

Pipers By the Lake

A lovely spot for breakfast, lunch or coffee, especially if you want to combine a meal with a slow wander around the lake, gardens or nearby tramway.

Grainery Lane

Tucked away just off Armstrong Street, Grainery Lane combines food, cocktails and a hidden-laneway atmosphere that feels very much at home in Ballarat.

Itinerant Spirits

A working distillery, cocktail bar and restaurant inside the beautifully repurposed former Ballarat Goods Shed. Come for locally made spirits and stay for one of the city's most impressive adaptive-reuse spaces.

Eclectic Tastes Cafe & Pantry

A long-standing local favourite near Lake Wendouree. A good stop before or after a walk around the lake or a visit to the Botanical Gardens.

Craig's Royal Hotel

You don't have to stay at Craig's to enjoy it. Stop for a meal, drink or coffee and take some time to appreciate one of Ballarat's most extraordinary historic interiors.

Kittelty's

A charming Ballarat East café and food producer known for handmade cakes, good coffee and an eclectic mix of gifts and vintage treasures.

GordonS

A café and bar in the historic village of Gordon, east of Ballarat. A great little stop if you're exploring beyond the city and taking the slower road through the region.

Commercial Hotel Kingston

A characterful country pub in tiny Kingston, north of Ballarat. Pair lunch or a drink here with a look at Kingston's historic Avenue of Honour for a particularly lovely Goldfields detour.

Jalan Jalan Eats

A casual local favourite for Southeast Asian flavours, tucked away near Lake Wendouree and the western side of the city.

Ballarat City Tales — Hidden Lanes

Our signature small-group walking experience explores Ballarat's Gold Rush history, architecture, hidden lanes, intriguing characters and places most visitors walk straight past.

It's designed for travellers who want more than a list of dates and landmarks — a deeper, more personal introduction to the city.

Perridak Arts

A First Nations-owned and operated gallery showcasing the work, stories and creativity of Aboriginal artists from Ballarat and the surrounding region. An important stop for anyone wanting to engage with living First Nations culture rather than treating Ballarat's story as beginning with the Gold Rush.

Sovereign Hill

Ballarat's internationally known living museum brings the nineteenth-century Gold Rush to life through historic streets, trades, mine experiences, costumed interpretation and hands-on activities.

Give it time — there's much more here than can comfortably be squeezed into a quick visit.

Ballarat Wildlife Park

A locally run wildlife park where visitors can encounter a wide range of Australian animals, including free-roaming kangaroos, koalas, wombats and other native wildlife.

Ballarat Botanical Gardens

One of our favourite places in Ballarat. Wander the historic gardens, explore the statuary and conservatory precinct and continue along the shores of Lake Wendouree. Particularly good for visitors who simply want to slow down for an hour or two.

Ballarat Tramway Museum

Ride one of Ballarat's historic trams beside Lake Wendouree and discover the city's tramway history. It's a particularly atmospheric way to travel between the Botanical Gardens and the lake precinct.

Golden City Paddle Steamer and Museum Society

One of Ballarat's quirkier heritage experiences.

Visit the Lake Wendouree Museum and, during the warmer months when operating, take a leisurely cruise on the Golden City Paddle Boat, a working replica inspired by the paddle steamers that once carried passengers around the lake.

Eerie Tours

Discover Ballarat after dark through stories of crime, mystery, ghosts and the darker side of the city's history.

Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute

One of Ballarat's great cultural institutions, established in the nineteenth century and still occupying an extraordinary building in the heart of Sturt Street.

Look beyond the façade: guided visits offer the chance to discover historic rooms, collections and stories that many visitors never realise are there.

Wander a little further

Some of our favourite places sit beyond central Ballarat.

Buninyong, Creswick, Kingston and Gordon are all easy additions to a Ballarat stay and offer a different side of the Goldfields — historic villages, country pubs, independent businesses, old avenues of honour, landscapes and quieter roads.

You don't need a packed itinerary. Pick a direction and give yourself time to stop when something looks interesting.

Take your time

Our favourite way to experience Ballarat is not to race between attractions.

Choose a neighbourhood. Walk. Stop for coffee. Go inside that interesting old building. Catch the tram. Browse an independent shop. Have dinner somewhere local. Stay the night and do some more tomorrow.
